Herpes is diagnosed usually through a blood test or a viral culture from a sore (lesion) during a suspected outbreak. If you suspect that you have herpes of any kind, you should consult your doctor for diagnosis. Once the diagnosis is made, you must work with your doctor to come up with an appropriate treatment plan.

Although there is no cure for herpes, there are multiple medications and treatment options that can provide those affected with some relief. There is even a herpes vaccine in the works which could help protect the infection in new patients. For those with the condition, new pharmaceuticals are being developer to improve upon current treatment options.  Common herpes medications that are currently available include: Acyclovir (Zovirax), Farmciclovir (Farmvir) and Valacyclovir (Valtrex).

In addition to medicine, individuals with the condition are urged to reduce stress and keep their immune systems strong. Stress reduction techniques include getting adequate rest, engaging in meditation, yoga and more. De-stressing will also improve your immune systems. Studies have shown that stress can actually make you sick. Although it may not directly cause an outbreak, it certainly doesn’t help.

Immunotherapy, which uses the body’s own immune system to fight infection, is another option. Immunotherapy is an attractive alternative because it can also utilize certain chemical agents, which mimic certain immune system proteins, to help to strengthen the body’s natural defenses to infection, increase white blood cells and much more.

Those who are afflicted with herpes are also encouraged to steer clear of foods that are high in I-Arginine such as certain nuts and seeds like almonds and peanuts, chocolate and raisins. In contrast, foods which are high in L-Lysine have been shown to alleviate symptoms and help stave off outbreaks.

Foods that should be a regular part of a herpes patient’s diet include:

  • meat (specifically red meat, pork and poultry)
  • cheese
  • certain fishes (cold water & sardines)
  • nonfat milk
  • legumes (beans, peas & lentils)
  • eggs
  • soybeans (particularly tofu)
  • spirulina
  • and fenugreek seed

L-lysine supplements may also be used. However, you should check with your doctor or holistic medical professional prior to including any herb, supplement or prescription medication in your herpes treatment plan. For tips on how to alleviate symptoms during an outbreak, click here.
