The symptoms of herpes will, of course, depend upon what type of the virus you contract. They are also dependent upon what stage of the virus you have and whether this is an initial or primary outbreak, or simply a reoccurrence.
Most individuals will have an initial outbreak of the herpees infection. This is when the symptoms will be their most severe. After recovery from the primary outbreak, the virus travels to other cells in the body, where it can reoccur at any time. Secondary outbreaks are much milder as a general rule. Recurrences of the various herpes infections can occur once every few years or, in some cases, several times a year.
In general, herpes sufferers, prior to an outbreak, receive some early warning symptoms called prodrome. These include a general feeling of being unwell, flu-like feelings, a low grade fever and even a generalized itching or burning sensation near the site of the outbreak.
