Prevention

Preventing herpes may be difficult, but it is possible. The condition is generally contagious, especially during an outbreak, and easily transmitted. Of course, how you transmit the disease will directly relate to the type of herpes you do have and require that part of the body that’s infected to come into contact with a part of the body on another individual that can become infected. For example, oral herpes can be transmitted by kissing and other mouth-to-skin activities.

The truth is that when most people speak about herpes, they are referring to genital herpes. If you or someone you love is infected with this condition, there are things you can do to keep from getting or spreading it.

The most important thing you can do is to practice safe sex. Avoid sexual contact during an outbreak and use a condom when you do have intercourse. It’s also a smart idea to stick to having one sexual relationship at a time. The more partners you have, the easier it is to catch or spread herps.

Remember that even if you don’t engage in intercourse, you can still transmit herpes during an outbreak so oral sex and any other skin on skin contact are to be avoided during an outbreak. Lesions or sores on other parts of the body can also transmit the condition. It’s not just the genital sores that can infect.

However, you shouldn’t worry about transmitting the condition by sitting on a toilet seat used by someone with herpes. Herpees can not be received by sharing cups, towels, bath water or a variety of other instances. Educate yourself. Knowing the facts will go along way towards keeping you herpes-free or, if you already have the condition, spreading it to those you love.
